Open-ear headphones are becoming popular among runners, cyclists, factory workers, parents, and anyone who wants to enjoy music or podcasts while staying aware of their surroundings. Most models are small and fit snugly around the ear.

However, Japanese audio startup New Wave Maker (nwm) offers a unique design with their Modernist, can-style One model.

The company claims the drivers provide “minimal sound leakage,” so the sound stays in your ears while still letting you hear what’s around you. It’s likely something you’d need to experience firsthand to fully understand.

Weighing only 6.5 oz (185 grams), they’re said to be comfortable for long use with “no feeling of compression.” They provide up to 20 hours of battery life on a full charge.

Founded in 2022, the company has little track record but charges prices similar to Bose and Sony. For those willing to take a chance on the sound quality, they cost $300.
